Common questions

The drill does not react when I play

Check the tuner screen first — if it shows a moving frequency, the microphone is working and the problem is in the drill; if it shows nothing, it is the microphone.

Things that stop note detection:

• Permission denied. Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone › FretBoardMastery.
• Too quiet. Pitch detection ignores signal below an amplitude threshold. Play closer to the device, or louder.
• More than one string ringing. Detection is monophonic. Mute the strings you are not playing.
• A chord. Same reason. The drill wants one clear note at a time.

Can I use the app without an instrument?

Yes. Choose “I’ll tap the fretboard” on the welcome screen, or turn on Touch mode in Settings › Game. Drills are answered by tapping the fret instead of playing it.

It hears the wrong note, an octave off

Low notes on a bass, and the lowest strings of a guitar, have weak fundamentals that pitch trackers sometimes read an octave high. Playing nearer the bridge and letting the note settle usually fixes it.

Why is it landscape only?

A fretboard is a wide object. In portrait it would either be too small to tap accurately or cropped so that the frets you need are off screen.

Where is my progress stored?

On your device. Nothing is uploaded — the app makes no network connections. Deleting the app deletes your progress, and there is currently no way to transfer it to another device.

Which instruments are supported?

Guitar and bass, switchable in Settings › Instrument.

Privacy

See the privacy policy. Short version: nothing is collected, nothing is transmitted, and microphone audio is analysed on-device and never recorded.
